Services Areas & Statistics


The Walter E. Boehm Birth Defects Centers currently serves over 680 clients across the Southeast.  Our patients have a primary diagnosis of a congenital birth defect of the brain and spinal cord, such as spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.  Our clients range in age from premature infants to adults in their late 40s and come from all socio-economic backgrounds.

In 2015, the Center served 755 birth defects patients from the following counties:

Tennessee: Bedford, Bledsoe, Blount, Bradley, Camden, Coffee, Dade, Dekalb, Fentress, Franklin, Gibson, Giles, Grainger, Grundy, Hamblen, Hamilton, Knox, Loudon, Macon, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Pickett, Polk, Putnam, Rhea, Sequatchie, Sevier, Union, Warren, White, Williamson  Georgia:  Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Cherokee, Cobb, Dade, Fannin, Floyd, Gilmer, Gordon, Hamilton, Houston, Murray, Polk, Taylor, Union, Walker, Whitfield  Alabama: Calhoun, DeKalb, Etowah, Hamilton, Jackson, Marshall; Mississippi: Harrison North Carolina: Cherokee, Clay, Durham, Macon, Perquimans South Carolina: Oconee

Program Services

  • Scheduled 392 outpatient physician (neurosurgery and urology) clinic visits at no charge to patient
  • Provided 355 Diagnostic Tests (CT scans, shunt series, MRIs, lab work) on site
  • Provided 229 meal vouchers to parents with hospitalized children
  • Distributed 51 gas cards to clients who drove more than 30 miles to attend the Boehm Center clinics
  • Performed 61 surgeries related to patients' diagnoses
  • Made 19 referrals to other physicians
  • Enrolled 41 new patients
  • Delivered 18 toys to patients who were hospitalized
  • Assisted with 6 Hospital Admissions
  • Reprogrammed 12 shunts at no cost to the patient
  • Provided emergency assistance to 2 families
  • Paid 6 additional medical bills for surgeries and other appointments related to diagnosis
  • Sponsored 2 children to attend Camp Horizon
  • Provided literature and education sessions to 43 families
  • Coordinated 300 additional services related to the continuity of care of our patients (Social security paperwork, prescription and supply refills and orders, coordinate other appointments, etc).
