Overview

The Walter E. Boehm Birth Defects Centers currently serves over 970 patients across the Southeast.  Our patients have a primary diagnosis of a congenital birth defect of the brain and spinal cord, such as spina bifida and/or hydrocephalus.  Our clients range in age from premature infants to adults in their late 50s and come from all socio-economic backgrounds.

In 2021, the Center served 952 birth defects patients from the following counties:

Program Services

  • 327 outpatient physician (neurosurgery and urology) clinic appointments
  • 352  Diagnostic Tests (CT scans, shunt series, MRIs, lab work)
  • 300 additional services related to patients' continuity of care
  • 148 Units of financial aid (medical bills, meal vouchers and gas cards)
  • 49 lifesaving surgeries related to neural tube defects
  • 28 Units of pre and post-natal education services for new families
